Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician from the United States. Born October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice-President of the United States. Harris is the first female vice president and highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as also the first African American and second Asian American vice president. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she was an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then, she was recruited by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. In 2010, she was elected Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. From 2017 to 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in 2016's Senate election, becoming the second African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for healthcare reform and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her pointed examination of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of assault on a woman.
